Your bike has been stolen. What to do, in order
The first hour is worth more than the next week. This is the order to do things in, and where a tracker fits into it.
Rule out the obvious first
Before anything else, make sure it was not towed. Traffic police remove wrongly parked two-wheelers in most Indian cities, and a towed bike looks exactly like a stolen one from where you are standing. Check with the local traffic police and any parking attendant.
If you have a tracker, open the app now. A last-known position sitting in a police impound tells you the whole story in a few seconds.
File the FIR immediately
Go to the police station in whose jurisdiction the bike was parked, not the one nearest your home. Take the registration certificate, your insurance policy, a copy of your ID and the key.
The FIR matters for two reasons: it is the legal record of the theft, and no insurer will process a claim without it. Many states also allow an online FIR for vehicle theft, which is faster - but confirm your insurer accepts that form before relying on it.
If your tracker has a last-known location, give it to the officer in writing and ask for it to be recorded. Acting on it is their decision.
Tell your insurer the same day
Most policies require notice within a short window, and late intimation is a common reason for rejection. Call, then follow up in writing so the date is on record.
You will typically be asked for the FIR copy, the RC, both keys, the policy document and a claim form. A missing key becomes a problem here, so find the spare before you are asked for it.
What a tracker does and does not do
It gives you a location to hand over. That is genuinely valuable, and it is the whole of what it offers.
It does not recover the bike - that is a police operation - and it is not insurance. A SIM-free tag reports where a phone last heard it, so if the bike is inside a container or a basement with nobody passing, the trail stops there. Say what you have, plainly, and let the officer judge it.
Keep the vehicle insured on its own terms. A tracker is a locating aid, not a substitute for cover.
Afterwards
If the bike is not found, ask for the final report - insurers usually need it to settle. Keep every acknowledgement, and note the names of the officers you dealt with.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to file an insurance claim?
Policies differ, but most require intimation within days and treat delay as grounds for rejection. Tell the insurer the same day and put it in writing.
Can I file an FIR online for a stolen bike?
Many state police portals accept online reports for vehicle theft. Confirm your insurer accepts that form of FIR before relying on it alone.
Will the police act on a tracker location?
They may, and giving it to them in writing is the right move. Acting on it is their call, and depends on jurisdiction and how current the position is.
